Oktoberfest 2010 will begin on September 18th and run until October 3rd……..so if you were thinking about going, book your tickets now!  Don’t stress though, the Germans run the festival every year, so remember these dates for the future:

2011:  September 17 – October 03

2012:  September 22 – October 07

Oktoberfest began nearly 200 years ago when King Ludwig of Germany married Therese of Saxony.  Ludwig decided to host a horse race and invite the people of Munich to celebrate his wedding.  Ludwig was very well known for loving beer, so beer was a major theme of the celebrations.  The festival was so great it was celebrated year after year, with the horse race eventually being abandoned, and it is now the largest beer festival in the world.  The Germans take Oktoberfest very seriously, and you will not be disappointed with the extravagance and the detail they provide to glorify their national drink, beer!

One thing TravAddict recommends you do to get prepared for the Oktoberfest celebrations, is to learn the song the Germans will sing over and over as they sway their beers in the air.  The entire crowd in a beer hall of over 5000 people will stop to sing, so it is best that you learn the words:

Ein Prosit, ein Prosit

Der Gemütlichkeit

Ein Prosit, ein Prosit

Der Gemütlichkeit.

The words basically translate to ‘A toast to happiness’.

If you can manage to get it together within the next week, G Adventures still has spots available on their Oktoberfest and Bavaria discovery trip beginning on September 18th!
